Many years ago the road from Copenhagen to Ringsted passed through Roskilde. Now part of this street is for pedestrians. The motorway passing Roskilde just south of the city was build to avoid the increasing number of cars passing through the city. For years this motorway has been unable to let the traffic pass smoothly. A widening of the motorway has taken place the last years and should be finished this year. The bridges over the motorway has to be adopted to the new reality. Very often I have passed the bridge at Køgevej in my car thinking I should walk and take some photos of the replacement of two old bridges with two new ones.

The other day I walked to the bridge south of the railstation. It was one of the dark winterdays we have seen very often this winter – and today I show you a few shots from the northern part of the east-bridge (you see traffic passing at the west-bridge).

The new bridge has to be placed carefully.

It has now been lowered to the right place?

It seems to be rather complicated to make such a new bridge…

Readers might have noticed that a photo a day at this blog has not been a reality. So has it been, and it can happen again. But – I have been thinking how to solve the problem in 2012. The decision is to have a weekly theme. There are many small villages in Roskilde municipality and it should be possible to make 7 photos if a village is visited.

The theme for week 2 is: Brordrup. Yesterday I was there, seven shots were made – and here is the first one. Brordrup is to the right (the farm that is seen is in Ramsømagle). The cattle enjoy the green danish winter.

Brordrup is a few houses and a few farms 1 kilometre west of Gadstrup. If you want an overview, I have made a photo from the south, take a look at Brordrup.

As you may know, I am using the local train a lot. This is not that train, but a railway-track-washing-train. Why? At autumn the leaves fall on the tracks and make them as soap to drive at. Some years cancellation of half the trains has been the reality. Now they are washing the leaves away – thanks!

The Rope Maker

The other day Tadre Mølle was visited. Our two grandchildren was on vacation and it was decided to visit the old, but still functioning watermill, Tadre Mølle (take a look at a danish blogpost with a few shots from the mill). Tadre Mølle is now part of Roskilde Museum.

We were lucky to visit the mill the day the rope maker was working.

I asked Aksel to be part of this miniportrait of his skills. Aksel told he learned to make ropes at the family farm 70 years ago, and because he had practiced ever since he still is able to make some ropes at special occasions at Tadre Mølle. He has a simple tool, but as you see at the end of the photos, he makes excellent ropes. Aksel told he has the feeling of ropemaking in his hands.

First Aksel placed 3 x 4 strings between the blue plate and “the other end”. He turns and turn – and suddenly there are 4 strings.

The the rope is made from the other end using another simple tool and by help of my gandchild turning and turning the moving part.

Here is the good, old tool.

The rope has to be secured in both ends.

Here is the result.

It was a cold day – and a pancake was good to have.

Roskilde Cathedral and Opel

Sometimes you have to uncomplicate, at least if you are 68 years old. I did so the other day. A lot of old articles from newpapers were recycled.

Among the papers were Politiken – a Danish newspaper – from October 1th, 1959. It was at that time 75 years old.

I was funny to see that old newspaper, and I photografed parts of it.

Of special interest to Roskilde Daily Photo was this ad from Opel. The background to the old car is Roskilde Cathedral, which has been shown many times at this blog.

To day the weather was very fine. My wife an I had a walk in Roskilde. At the harbour we saw two swans. And two more. Suddenly one of these birds found the others to be too close – or what the motive was. An attack was started, the two escaped and order was reestablished.

Roskilde Monastery

The other evening I participated in a visit to Roskilde Monastery. The story was told. It was founded 1699, but the buildings was made by bricks from buildings at the place from 1200. Re-use was modern at that time.

The danish summer was rainfull – second most rainfull in more than 100 years.

Today, the first day in October, we have had a very pleasant day in Denmark. No day in October has ever been as warm as today (26.5 degree Celsius), og we have never has a “summerday” (25 degree) in October before. Next week will be more autumn-like.

The Para-cycling Road World Championship takes place the next 4 days. The opening cermony took place earlier today.

The ceremony was conducted by Master Fatman, and the Mayor of Roskilde, Joy Mogensen, spoke.

Jesper Skibby, a famous danish racing cyclist, told he knew the hard work all participants had done to be able to be here this day.

End of Eurorando 2011 in Denmark

Yesterday ended Eurorando 2011 in the eastern part of Denmark with 7 walks all ending at the Large Spring at Byparken in Roskilde. The walks was between 4 and 26 km. I participated in one of them, 13 km at Skjoldungestien from Lejre to Roskilde. That was a very fine walk.

Water is the theme for this Eurorando, symbolising life and movement. Water from many part of Europe will be collected and brought to Andalusia, to be united at the end of Eurorando 2011 later this year.

At the walk Lavringe Stream was crossed – there was much water in it. As seen at the last photo.

At the first photo you see Lis Nielsen, President of the European Ramblers Association, and Torben Christensen, Chairman of the Danish Ramblers Association, filling a bottle with water from the Large Spring.

End of Summer

In a few hours time the summer is ending.

In Denmark the summermonths has not been the best. It has been a wet summer, the summer with second most rain in the period from 1874.

The summer has not been warm – you have to go 49 years back to find a summer with a lower max temperature. Some places in Denmark has not even had a summerday (25 degrees Celsius) this summer.

Alice From The Danish Kidney Association

Alice was at the streets of Roskilde today to promote the Danish Kidney Association by givning pedestrians an envelope with seeds for their garden - hoping the seeds will make people think of others suffering of kidney-diseases - and perhaps deciding to offer one of their kidneys in case of a need. I understand that 1700 danes lives a good life with a new kidney. But many more are in need to get a new one. Take a look at Nyreforeningen.dk.
Alice told me, that she herself is not suffering from a kidneydisease, but has a relative who does.
